19 gravures sur cuivre, fin XVe-début XVIe s., +/- 7,5 x 5,5 cm (découpées au TC), papier vergé; non signées, texte manuscrit au verso. Qqs traces de montage ancien au verso, qqs petits défauts, 1 pièce avec manques plus importants etc. Bonne condition générale.
Très rare ensemble de gravures ayant fait partie d'un livre de prière de petite dimension, probablement composé dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux dans la 1ère moitié du XVIe s., les textes mss. au verso d'une même main (partiellement rognés) se présentant simultanément en latin, néerlandais et français. Rédigées en vers aux encres noire et rouge, les prières débutent par "Ave Maria", sauf 2 invoquant "Pater Noster". Probablement inspirées par ou copiées d'Israhel van Meckenem le jeune, graveur et éditeur d'estampes allemand (avant 1450-après 1517), les p. évoquent des scènes de la vie du Christ : la visite de Marie à sa cousine Elisabeth (ou à ste Anne ?), la Nativité, les Rois Mages, la fuite en Egypte, la présentation aux Docteurs, l'enfance du Christ, l'entrée à Jérusalem, la dernière Cène, le Christ devant Hérode, le portement de croix, la crucifixion, la mise au tombeau...; 2 p. de facture différente figurent la Passion et un groupe de 4 saintes. On peut supposer que ce petit bréviaire fut composé ou utilisé dans le cadre d'un couvent ou d'un béguinage de nos régions. Ensemble quasiment unique dont on ne trouve pas trace dans les ouvrages de référence habituels, extrêmement intéressant pour l'histoire des débuts de la gravure dans nos régions, très peu de ces témoignages ayant survécu.
*** 19 kopergravures, eind 15e - begin 16e e., +/- 7,5 x 5,5 cm (afgesneden tot de prentrand), gevergeerd papier; niet gesigneerd, ms. tekst op verso. Enkele oude montagesporen op verso, enkele kleine gebreken, 1 stuk met groter gebrek etc. Algemeen goede ex.
Zeer zeldzaam lot gravures uit een klein getijdenboek, waarschijnlijk samengesteld in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden in de 1ste helft van de 16e e. De door één hand geschreven teksten op de verso (gedeeltelijk afgesneden), zijn zowel in het latijn als in het nederlands en het frans. De gebeden in versvorm zijn geschreven in zwarte en rode inkt. Ze beginnen met "Ave Maria", met uitzondering van 2 die gericht zijn tot "Pater Noster". De prenten zijn waarschijnlijk geinspireerd door of gecopieerd van Israhel van Mekenem de Jongere, Duitse graveur en uitgever van gravures (voor 1450 - na 1517). Ze stellen scènes voor uit het leven van Christus : het Bezoek van Maria aan haar nicht Elisabeth (of aan de H. Anna ?), de Geboorte, Drie Koningen, de Vlucht naar Egypte, de Opdracht in de Tempel, de Intocht in Jeruzalem, het Laatste Avondmaal, Christus voor Herodes, de Kruisweg, de Kruisiging, de Graflegging ...; 2 grav. zijn van een andere hand nl. de Passie en een groep van 4 heiligen. Men kan veronderstellen dat dit klein breviarum samengesteld of gebruikt is in een klooster of een begijnhof van onze streken. Vrijwel uniek geheel, uiterst interessant voor de geschiedenis van de gravures in onze streken, gezien zeer weinig van deze getuigenissen zijn overgebleven.

Rare complete set, reverse copy of engravings made c. 1598-1601 by J. Sadeler I and Raphael Sadeler I after J. Bassano. It derives from a suite of 4 paintings designed by Bassano around 1574; the series proved extremely popular and inspirational for numerous artists in Italy, Flanders and France. Etonnante représentation calligraphique du Christ en croix, seuls le visage, les mains et les pieds étant finement détaillés au lavis. Le motif est cerné de plusieurs filets noirs.

3 (of 4 : lacking Summer) plates, very nice allegorical compositions framed by borders with animals, seasonal fruit, flowers etc. on a hatched background. "Ver" dedicated to Venus, "Autumnus" to Bacchus and "Hyems" to Aeolus. Ref Hollstein XV, p. 199, 1154, 1155-1157.

Stuck by upper corners under passe-partout. Some marg. stains, one repaired tear, "Luna" remargined with central fold, some traces on verso. Good set.
7 (of 8 : lacking Venus) plates in 1st state : title and 6 allegorical figures on chariots riding on the clouds above a riverscape (the Sun, the Moon, Jupiter, Saturnus, Mercurius and Mars). Ref Hollstein XXI, p. 168, 517-521, 523-524.

State not described by Hollstein, with the copper plate smaller than the orig. one (22,1 x 29,9 cm) and without any inscriptions. From a set of circa 19 pl. of "Satires" or moralistic subjects, representing a fool leaving a room in which 7 women are fighting around (empty) trousers. Ref Hollstein XLIV, p. 256, 1282.
